Beatriz Milhazes, born in 1960 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a distinguished artist known for her vibrant, large-scale works that blend Brazilian cultural imagery with references to Western Modernist painting. Milhazes has emerged as one of Brazil's most successful contemporary painters, with her practice encompassing painting, drawing, and collage. This process involves painting patterns onto clear plastic, which she then places on canvas before peeling the plastic away, leaving a layer of paint. This process is repeated several times on each canvas, creating multi-planed compositions. This technique, peculiar to some, is attractive to Milhazes due to its inherent omission of the artist's gesture, allowing her to play around with the composition without the texture of brushstrokes or the "hand" of the painter being visible on the canvas.
Milhazes' geometric, Technicolor canvases have drawn the attention of the international art world, particularly following her representation of Brazil at the 2003 Venice Biennale. She was the subject of her first comprehensive retrospective at the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, Paris, in 2009.
